Xavier Worthy’s stirring NFL debut leaves his quarterback feeling good.

The Kansas City Chiefs rookie wide receiver caught two passes for 47 yards and a touchdown and also scored a 21-yard rushing touchdown in the Chiefs’ 27-20 win over the Baltimore Ravens in Week 1. After the game, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes praised Worthy’s ability to open the door to an offense that lacked explosive elements at times last season.

“Obviously we want to use him more and more, but I thought he had a great day and made big plays in key moments,” Mahomes said, according to Nate Taylor of The Athletic. “It was good to get the whole offense going. Just his being out there creates opportunities.”

Mahomes further described how Worthy’s speed alone helps players like Travis Kelce and Rashee Rice.

“When he’s out there, they’ve been playing shell coverage,” Mahomes said, according to ESPN’s Adam Teicher. “That frees up guys like (Travis Kelce) and guys like (Rashee Rice) down low, and that’s the great thing about this offense: We’re able to do all that, and that’s when we’re at our best.”

The Chiefs selected Worthy with the No. 28 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft and his potential was immediately clear. Worthy set the record for the 40-yard dash at the 2024 NFL Scouting Combine and could fill a role in the Chiefs offense formerly held by eight-time Pro Bowler Tyreek Hill as a rushing option on the long offensive line.

While Hill sets the bar incredibly high, Worthy’s early success and college performance show the potential he has. He totaled 75 catches for 1,014 yards and five touchdowns for Texas in 2023, and his two-touchdown performance for Kansas City could be a sign of things to come.

Worthy hopes to help Kansas City win the Super Bowl for the third year in a row, and that journey continues in Week 2 when the Chiefs host the Cincinnati Bengals on Sept. 15.
