Flash flooding and heavy rain may occur in New Orleans (LA) | Weather

The National Weather Service issued a flood warning for parts of southeast Louisiana, including New Orleans, Friday morning as residents prepare for more rain and thunderstorms over the weekend.

The flood warning is in effect until Saturday morning. Meteorologists say the urban areas south of Interstate 10 and 12 – including New Orleans, Gulfport and Biloxi – are most at risk from heavy rain. Flash flooding and road closures are possible in some areas.

In New Orleans, 3 to 4 inches of rain are expected by Friday night, meteorologists said. In Slidell, up to 6 inches of rain is possible.

East-facing coasts in southeast Louisiana, including New Orleans East, may see some minor flooding through Friday, with tides 1-2 feet above flood stage. Forecasters advise drivers to watch for flooded roads.

Unrest in the Gulf

According to the National Hurricane Center in Miami, the heavy rains occurred as a result of tropical turbulence in the Gulf of Mexico.

NHC Update

From the National Hurricane Center.

The low pressure system on the edge of the Gulf states brought showers and thunderstorms to Louisiana on Thursday. Although the state is dealing with the side effects of the system, the probability of the system developing within the next week is low (10%), according to hurricane forecasters.

On Friday or Saturday, the disturbance will likely combine with a frontal system and bring rain showers to the Gulf.
