The ending of “The Perfect Couple” explains: Who is the murderer?

Note: This story contains spoilers for the finale of “The Perfect Couple.”

“The Perfect Couple” gives viewers a glimpse into an upper-class family on Nantucket where everything is modest and decent – until it isn’t.

Just hours before Greer Garrison Winbury (Nicole Kidman) is scheduled to host an extravagant wedding for her son Benji (Billy Howle) and his fiancée Amelia (Eve Hewson), the bride-to-be finds the lifeless body of her best friend Merritt (Meghann Fahy). The wedding venue quickly turns into a crime scene as the police begin investigating Merritt’s death.

With the shocking revelation that Merritt is pregnant with Tag’s (Liev Schreiber) unborn child, a number of suspects are in the air, but Episode 6 reveals who did it.

Read on for the full breakdown of who killed Merritt in The Perfect Pair and whether the Netflix series ended the same way as the book.

How did Merritt die?

In the finale, Greer reveals to Amelia that Merritt has high levels of barbiturates in his system, which Amelia tells her parents. Amelia’s mother then begins to search through her pill bottle and reveals to the police that she had three pills that would cause euthanasia, but one of them was missing. The one pill wouldn’t have killed anyone, but it would have rendered someone unconscious. It turns out that Thomas (Jack Reynor) took one of the pills as part of his prescription roulette.

The show flashes back to the night before the wedding – after Thomas and Isabel (Isabelle Adjani) had already left together – and shows Abby (Dakota Fanning) watching Merritt alone on the beach, stepping on glass. Abby takes the pill from Thomas’ drawer and goes to the kitchen to crush it and mix it with juice in a glass. She then takes the juice to Merritt on the beach and encourages Merritt to swim in the ocean with her.

When Merritt lost consciousness as they entered the water, Abby pushed Merritt’s head into the sea, causing her to drown and die.

Who killed Merritt?

While Thomas may have had a hand in obtaining the pill that knocked her unconscious, there is no denying that Abby was responsible for Merritt’s death.

Why did Abby kill Merritt?

In short: money. The terms of Tag’s trust fund for the Winbury sons state that the money cannot be paid out until the last Winbury child turns 18. That would still be months away, as Will (Sam Nivola) is about to turn 18. But if Merritt had given birth to the child she was expecting, the clock would have been reset another 18 years.

What happens to the murderer?

In the finale, Abby was arrested and imprisoned, so it can be assumed that she will face legal consequences for the murder.

Is the murderer the same as in the book?

Yes and no. Abby is still the murderer in Elin Hilderbrand’s book of the same name, but the death is an accident rather than a deliberate plot.

In the book, Abby crushes the same pill and puts it in a drink, but this time the drink was intended for the character named Isabel in the series (in the book, the character is named Featherleigh). The pill is meant to knock Featherleigh out so she won’t sleep with her husband Thomas, but Merritt accidentally takes it and drowns in the water after she falls unconscious.

“The Perfect Pair” is now streaming on Netflix.
