US men’s and women’s teams win gold in the 4×400-meter relay at the Olympics

The US track and field athletes said goodbye to the Paris Olympics in style, taking home five medals – three gold, one silver and one bronze – on the penultimate day of the Games.

Both the men’s and women’s relay teams won gold in the 4x400m relay final on Saturday, August 10, and Masai Russell also took first place in the women’s 100m hurdles final.

Shelby McEwen won silver in the men’s high jump final, while Grant Fisher finished third in the men’s 5000m final.

However, the relay teams ended the evening with a bang: the men defeated Botswana and the women won against the Netherlands.

Rai Benjamin, Christopher Bailey, Bryce Deadmon and Vernon Norwood even set an Olympic record in the men’s final with a time of 2:54.43.

Meanwhile, the women’s team presented its stars Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone and Gabby Thomas with additional gold medals, which they won together with their teammates Shamier Little and Alexis Holmes.

McEwan competed for the United States on Saturday and set a personal best high jump result of 2.36, just behind the score of New Zealand’s Hamish Kerr.

In the 100-meter hurdles, Russell left the competition behind and beat Frenchwoman Cyrena Samba-Mayela in front of her home crowd. Grace Stark from Team USA came in fifth and Alaysha Johnson came in seventh.

Fisher finished third behind Norwegian Jakob Ingebrigtsen and Kenyan Ronald Kwemoi.

The men’s 4×400-meter relay victory was some redemption for Team USA after a disappointing performance in the 4×100-meter relay on Friday, in which the team was disqualified after a botched baton handoff.

Even without the disqualification, the men’s relay would have finished in second to last place.

Following the men’s 4×100-meter relay performance, the runners – Christian Coleman, Kenny Bednarek, Kyree King and Fred Kerley – said they “just didn’t get it done” on the course. The group was notably without teammate Noah Lyles, who tested positive for Covid-19 earlier in the week.
