Will Ferrin kicked a 26-yard field goal with 1:58 minutes left on Friday night, giving BYU an 18-15 non-conference win over SMU in Dallas.

The Mustangs’ last gasp came with 1:25 left when Kevin Jennings’ pass to Jordan Hudson from the 40-yard line was incomplete on fourth-and-10.

Cougars’ 20. The result allowed BYU to improve its record to 2-0 and push SMU back to 2-1.

BYU quarterback Jake Retzlaff completed 15 of 28 passes for 202 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. Jennings was 15 of 32 for 140 yards with one interception for SMU. Mustangs starter Preston Stone played just three series and was 2 of 4 for 4 yards and had three sacks.

SMU led 12-7 in the third quarter after Collin Rogers made the game’s fourth field goal, and BYU answered with a 61-yard touchdown run. Enoch Nawahine scored a 9-yard touchdown run at the 1:15 mark, followed by a two-point conversion pass.

Rogers’ fifth field goal attempt, a 45-yard field goal with 6:17 left, tied the score at 15-15. The Cougars responded with a 67-yard drive and scored on fourth-and-1 with a 37-yard run by Miles Davis at their 48-yard line that set up Ferrin.

BYU started its second scoring drive, marching 75 yards and finishing with a 16-yard touchdown pass from Retzlaff to tight end Mata’ava Ta’ase. It was the second time in as many games the duo combined for a score.

That was about it for the Cougars’ offense until their final drive of the half. They had four consecutive three-and-outs, but were then blocked on a fourth down at the 26-yard line by an SMU defense that prevented them from scoring after BYU recovered a fumbled punt at the Mustangs’ 35-yard line.

Rogers’ three field goals in the second quarter gave SMU a 9-7 halftime lead. He made a 53-yarder at 13:06, scored from 52 yards about seven minutes later and scored on a 38-yarder in the final minute.

The Cougars had a chance to take the lead at halftime, but Ferrin missed his 55th shot as time expired.
