Still, Reed’s 138 receiving yards were more than the 122 yards of all Green Bay’s other receivers combined.

He was also the playmaker who got the Packers out of their rut.

Trailing just six points after a first quarter that included two drives started in the red zone, Green Bay found itself back in Eagles territory on the offense’s first possession of the second quarter.

On the fifth play, from Philly’s 33-yard line, Reed followed his blockers perfectly on an end-around before shaking off an arm tackle and breaking past a handful of defenders for a direct hit.

That put the Packers’ lead back at 12-7. Then on their next drive, he put them back in front by finding space in the broken coverage, outsmarting safety CJ Gardner-Johnson and sprinting the rest of the way for a 70-yard touchdown pass.

The Green Bay Packers offense fell into an inconsistent pattern again in the following period, and Reed himself had a third-down drop late in the third quarter that preceded a missed 43-yard kick by rookie Brayden Narveson.

Later, when the Packers were desperate, he made a catch of much greater difficulty, catching a 33-yard pass from Love on the sideline despite a hit from Quinyon Mitchell.

Love was injured in the next game. Any news on his injury, good or bad, will be the deciding factor in Green Bay’s season opener, but Reed’s performance was eye-catching nonetheless.

Even though he is not the team’s number one target, he certainly seems to be the most dangerous of all after the first week.

His continued development will be even more important for the Packers if Love is out for an extended period of time, and he knows that.

“I still need to refine the details like that one drop I had,” Reed said. “I just need to look into it. No doubt about it. I need to keep working on getting better.”
