BATON ROUGE – The LSU football team opens the home portion of its 2024 football schedule against Nicholls State on Saturday, scheduled for (6:30 p.m., ESPN+) at Tiger Stadium.

The game will be the first meeting between the two programs, which are 69 miles apart, a short 90-minute trip on Interstate 10.

How much does LSU pay for the guaranteed game to host the Colonels, members of the Southland Conference as part of the FCS division?

According to records obtained by the USA Today Sports Network, Nicholls will make $760,000 for his first visit to Tiger Stadium this weekend.

That amount is the typical market value of FBS programs scheduling and paying an FCS program. LSU wrote Grambling State a check for the same amount last season, but that’s $60,000 more than what it paid Southern, also based in Baton Rouge, in 2022. In 2021, McNeese State earned $750,000 for playing the Tigers.

LSU received a $5 million payout to play USC on Sunday in the Vegas Kickoff Classic in Las Vegas, an ESPN event.

LSU and Nicholls already agreed to the game in February.

Under the agreement, LSU is also required to donate $10,000 to the Nicholls’ Colonel Athletic Association, a fundraising arm of the school’s athletic department that helps with program improvement.

No. 19 LSU (0-1) lost 27-20 to No. 11 USC in its season opener in Las Vegas on Sunday night. The Colonels stayed close throughout the game but lost 25-17 on the road at Louisiana Tech last Saturday.
