Before the game

Syracuse star linebacker Marlowe Wax is present but, as was discussed frequently during the week, will not play against Georgia Tech. His right foot is heavily bandaged — it looks like a soft cast, but I’m not a doctor — and he uses a scooter to get around the sideline. Defensive end Greg Delaine will not play, as expected, because of a broken right hand. Wide receiver Justus Ross-Simmons remains out with a hamstring injury.

Syracuse begins ACC play against a seeded opponent that can puff out its chest after defeating Florida State on neutral court in Ireland a few weeks ago.

If the Orange (1-0) can win the duel in the training match, they can send an equally loud message at the beginning of the season and pave the way for a 4-0 start for the third time in a row.

Saturday’s game will feature two quarterbacks making their second appearance after beginning their careers with two of the biggest brands in college football.

Ohio State transfer Kyle McCord threw for 354 yards and four touchdowns in a career-high 38-22 win over Ohio State last week. McCord, a former five-star recruit, looked good in SU’s opener with NFL-level ball placement.

Haynes King, a two-year starter at Georgia Tech, is the son of a longtime Texas high school coach and was labeled a throwback at the position because of his preparation, toughness and leadership skills. He was the fifth-best dual-threat quarterback in the 2020 recruiting class, according to the 247Sports Composite.

King was set to replace Kellen Mond at Texas A&M before a broken leg ended his 2021 season. King entered the 2022 season as the starter for the Aggies, but was benched after two games, splitting time with Connor Weigman and Max Johnson before being transferred.
