Overheard outside Michigan’s locker room: Hard look in the mirror and no finger pointing

ANN ARBOR – Michigan’s football team found itself in an unfamiliar position after its 31-12 loss to No. 3 Texas on Saturday.

In the previous 23 games at Michigan Stadium, players would go to the postgame press room at Crisler Center — right next to the Big House — and celebrate a win. But the 10th-ranked Wolverines had little to celebrate on Saturday, falling behind early and failing to match the Longhorns on either side of the ball, losing 31-12.

New head coach Sherrone Moore and the players were asked what went wrong after the team suffered its first regular season loss since 2021 and first home loss since 2020. Here are notable quotes from Moore and the players after Saturday’s loss:

“My message to the team was that it takes determination. We haven’t lost here in a long time. We don’t like losing. With us, we never want to lose, so we never think about losing. But for them and for us, I’m just thinking about them. I’m thinking about how they feel and what we’re going to do to get better. That’s all we’re worried about right now. We’re going to do everything we can to get better in all three phases, and every little bit, and my message to them was that we have to do it together. You can’t point fingers, and you find out who you are on the team when adversity strikes.”

Moore about how he deals with a loss

“It’s not a problem maintaining the standard. The standard that’s been set here, how we do things, how we approach every single day, every practice, every meeting, every discussion – that standard hasn’t changed. It’s on all of us to maintain that standard in every way, and that’s something we clearly didn’t do well enough today. I didn’t do a good enough job as a quarterback today. It’s on me to be better, to play better.

“It sucks because you come into this game knowing there’s a lot on the line. You want to win. So we’ve got to take a long, hard look in the mirror at what kind of team we want to be, who we want to be. But I know, I know on my end, that adversity – I’m used to it. I’m ready to deal with it and take it in stride and wake up tomorrow morning with a burning passion to get better.”

Quarterback Davis Warren about how the team is trying to maintain the winning culture of the last three years, when it went 40-3. Warren, a former walk-on and cancer survivor, completed 22 of 33 passes for 204 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions on Saturday.

“I think they did a great job with the offense they presented to us. It’s similar to our defense – a lot of positional play. There are running backs who act as receivers and there are receivers who act like running backs. We were prepared for that. We just didn’t execute it well enough.”

Safety Quinten Johnson about how Texas’ offense attacked them. The Longhorns’ running backs combined for eight catches for 56 yards and a touchdown, while receiver Ryan Wingo also ran for 55 yards on an end-around. In total, Texas rushed for 389 yards, 279 of which came in the first half.

“I don’t think that really changes. A is a loss. Obviously, with one or two losses, you have a better chance of making the playoffs. But it’s the same either way. I feel like we should have won that game. We have to stick it out and win games like this. It hurts. But we just have to get better on offense. I have to get better.”

Tight End Colston Loveland whether he views defeat differently as the playoff field expands to 12 teams this year. Loveland, who finished with eight catches for 70 yards, a team-high 100 receiving yards, and had a fumble in the second quarter.

“I think he just did a good job. He stepped up a lot more in the pocket when our rushes went up. He moved well in the pocket on third downs and that really kept the drives alive. The play-action passing game worked. He ran the open routes well. We just need to communicate better and make sure we do that. We mixed man and zone play, so it wasn’t ‘we’re a man,’ ‘we’re in the zone,’ or anything like that. So we just need to get all the routes better coordinated and communicate better. When you look back and see the missed assignments, that’s really what hurt us.”

Moore about what made Quinn Ewers so effective on Saturday. The quarterback from Texas threw for 246 yards and three scores on 24 of 36 passes.
