Preview of “The Perfect Couple”: Watch the first 7 minutes of the crime series now

Grab the truffle popcorn and a glass of red wine, because you can watch the opening scene of The perfect couple at the moment.

Showrunner and creator Jenna Lamia hopes these will be your snacks of choice when you tune in on September 5 to continue consuming the crime series. “This is what I’ve always envisioned for some reason,” she tells Tudum. “If we don’t give Olivia Pope, we haven’t done our job.”

The perfect couplebased on the best-seller “Strand” by Elin Hilderbrand, captures the textures, colors and oysters of a summer on Nantucket in the first seven minutes. “In everything I’ve done, I’ve always been very careful to make sure the world is right, but also that the characters are specific, because what never works is when it becomes generic,” director and executive producer Susanne Bier tells Tudum. “You have to understand the world.”

Lamia knew that Nantucket would be a character in the series. “When I first spoke to Elin herself, one of the things we agreed on was that we really wanted to get Nantucket right,” she says. “We had to get the details right, the hydrangeas, the red Nantucket pants, the worn boat shoes. It’s wealth that looks like it’s not trying at all.”

The splendor of the event is a celebration of the wedding of Benji Winbury (Billy Howle) and Amelia Sacks (Eve Hewson). Hosted by Greer Garrison Winbury (Nicole Kidman), the groom’s mother, the #WinburyWedding promises to be an unforgettable event on the Fourth of July weekend.

In the opening minutes, which you can watch above, a camera crew gamely follows the Winburys’ high-society guests as they toast the happy couple at the rehearsal dinner. We’re quickly introduced to maid of honor Merritt Monaco (Meghann Fahy), best man Shooter Dival (Ishaan Khattar), and the rest of the Winbury dynasty, including father Tag (Liev Schreiber), Benji’s older brother Thomas (Jack Reynor) and his pregnant wife Abby (Dakota Fanning), younger brother Will (Sam Nivola), and family friend Isabel Nallet (Isabelle Adjani).

But the next morning, the champagne is no longer so fizzy, and the Nantucket police station gets a call that they’ve found a “floater” — a dead body — on the Winbury property. As Police Chief Dan Carter (Michael Beach) says, “Nobody’s getting married today.”

Lamia hopes people will watch The perfect couple “with bated breath and the need to keep going because they can’t stand the fact that they’re not sure who did it yet,” she says. “But I hope they’ll laugh too!”
