Tropical weather expected in the Gulf early this week

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) – We’ll end the weekend with nice weather on Sunday, but we’ll have to expect a tropical threat in the Gulf this week.

A tropical wave in the southwestern Gulf will combine with a stalled frontal boundary offshore early this week, likely forming a tropical depression that could develop into a tropical storm or low-power hurricane by mid-week.

The next storm name on the list is Francine.

Until the center of this system forms, the path and intensity are uncertain. Coastal residents from Texas to Mississippi should monitor the weather forecast closely this week.

Regardless of where the system goes, heavy rain is likely. Up to 120mm of rain could fall, with even more in coastal areas. Our soils are already saturated, so we can expect flash flooding.

Wind and coastal influences are also possible.

Sunday will be pleasant due to the passing front. Dew points will be lower, giving us a touch of dry air and cooler lows in the morning. Highs will be around 30 degrees, with partly cloudy skies.
