As the Tennessee Titans begin Week 1 of the 2024 NFL season against the Chicago Bears, they are hoping that all the work they put in during the offseason will pay off.
The offseason was all about acquiring talent on both sides of the ball, and lots of it. This Titans team looks to be one of the most advanced franchises in the NFL right now, adding a ton of core players through free agents, trades, and even the draft.
Will Levis enters his second year with a great supporting cast and fans are excited to see what potential he will unleash.
However, not everyone is convinced about Levis yet. There are obviously people who doubt his ability to make it at the professional level and who believe there was a reason for his exit from the draft last spring.
This may be a bit premature, but a recent sensational report is worth mentioning.
ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, in a recent column he co-wrote with other NFL insiders, pulled back the curtain and dropped a key quote on a situation in Dallas. With quarterback Dak Prescott still without a new contract, the Cowboys are reportedly looking to make a deal. They would like to extend his contract.
But there is still no deal. And Fowler gave us a pretty tantalizing statement in this column.
“… a statement from someone with direct knowledge of the situation during the week – ‘looks like free agents at the moment’ – gives me pause,” Fowler wrote.
Fowler also said that “people in Dallas admit this is complicated because Prescott is not afraid of free agency” and that it will “take some work” to get this deal done.
If you’re a Cowboys fan, that doesn’t sound promising.
Again, there is nothing against Levis. We hope that he takes a big step forward and The Franchise quarterback the Titans need. I personally believe he has all the necessary traits to become a legitimate franchise quarterback at this level.
But if not, and I’m wrong, then Prescott would be a big step.
The new additions to this team have put the Titans in a position to win in the near future. Veterans like DeAndre Hopkins, Calvin Ridley and Tyler Boyd are receivers that form a win-now receiver. And Prescott would have the opportunity to join a former teammate, running back Tony Pollard.
When you make the connection between Prescott and Pollard, it doesn’t sound so crazy now, does it?
Dak will be 32 years old when the 2025 season begins, and with all the veterans that have been added on both sides of the ball for Tennessee, this team could actually be entering a win-now window. Therefore, Levis needs to have a monster season. He needs to show the Titans he can be their guy.
If not, it looks like Tennessee could find the perfect replacement in free agency next year.
