A Beach Park man who forced his way into a gun store in Winthrop Harbor and attempted to steal weapons was sentenced to just over 300 days in prison, which he considers time already served.

Robert A. Tello, 31, of Beach Park, was charged in October 2023 with burglary, criminal damage to property, possession of burglary tools, two counts of resisting arrest and obstruction of identification.

The charges stem from an incident to which Winthrop Harbor Police were called on October 4, 2023, at approximately 12:11 a.m. at The Outdoorsman, 221 Sheridan Road in Winthrop Harbor.

Lake County Assistant Prosecutor Dino Katris said at the time that when officers arrived, they found Tello leaving the gun store after receiving a 911 call about broken glass.

Tello had a hammer in his waistband. He also had a crowbar and another hammer in his backpack.

Video surveillance showed Tello banging on a window at least 15 times before gaining entry, Katris said.

Katris said Tello was seen going straight to the gun counter, but he found that the weapons were kept in a secure case.

Tello left the store without stealing anything because he no longer had access to the weapons, Katris said.

Tello refused to reveal his identity to police after he was arrested for the break-in, so police called federal police and authorities in Kenosha for help, Katris said.

Facial recognition software was used for identification. Tello has been held in the Lake County Jail since his arrest.

According to court documents, Tello pleaded guilty Wednesday to one count of burglary, a Class 2 felony. The remaining charges were dropped.

A judge approved the settlement and sentenced Tello to 307 days in prison under the agreement.

The 307 days are already considered served because Tello will be credited with 307 days that she has already served in custody.

Tello will serve 24 months’ probation and was ordered to pay $2,265 in restitution. He was also prohibited from consuming alcohol or drugs and from possessing firearms, among other restrictions.
