JK Dobbins runs for 135 yards, Chargers beat Raiders 22-10

The Raiders had the advantage midway through the fourth quarter when head coach Antonio Pierce had a decision to make.

Trailing 16-10, Las Vegas had a fourth and one attempt at the Chargers 43-yard line.

What would you do there?

Pierce opted to punt, but the kick was fairly caught at Los Angeles’ 8.

But eight plays and 92 yards later, the Chargers scored a touchdown and extended their lead to 22-10 – that was the final score of the game.

The Raiders defense had played well up to that point, but Pierce’s decision to trust the unit didn’t pay off. Running back JK Dobbins gained 2 yards to move the chains on third-and-2 from the Chargers’ 16. One play later, Dobbins gained 61 yards on second-and-3 to bring Los Angeles to the visitors’ 14.

On third and six attempts from Las Vegas’ 10-yard line, Justin Herbert scored the first touchdown of the rookie receiver’s career by hitting Ladd McConkey, giving the Chargers the lead.

Dobbins rushed for just eight yards in the first half, but was great in the second, rushing for 135 yards on 10 carries. His 12-yard touchdown early in the fourth quarter gave Los Angeles a 16-7 lead.

Herbert completed 17 of 26 passes for 144 yards and scored one touchdown. McConkey finished with five catches for 39 yards.

Chargers edge rushers Joey Bosa and Khalil Mack also played well. Bosa had seven tackles and one sack. Mack had 1.5 sacks on the day.

Las Vegas’ offense struggled to get going and suffered from turnovers. Minshew was out of alignment with a receiver and had a backwards pass in the first half that went nowhere and resulted in a fumble. Running back Zamir White had the ball knocked away on a good run and fumbled.

Minshew finished the game completing 25 of 33 passes for 257 yards, one touchdown and one interception. White rushed for 44 yards on 13 carries. Davante Adams caught five passes for 59 yards. In his debut, first-round pick Brock Bowers caught six passes for 58 yards.

The only time the Raiders reached the end zone was a swing pass from Minshew to running back Alexander Mattison, which went 31 yards.

Jim Harbaugh is currently 1-0 as head coach of the Chargers and is making his debut in the role more than two decades after serving as the team’s quarterback.

Pierce falls to 0-1 as the team’s permanent head coach after serving as interim coach last year.

Las Vegas will be back on the road next week when the club heads to the East Coast to face Baltimore.

The Chargers will also be on the East Coast, playing against the Panthers in Charlotte.
