Explore: Oakwood Lake Park in Oxford Township

Oxford, MI – In northern Oakland County lies Oakwood Lake Township Park, a 300-acre park with a small trail system and a disc golf course. I visited this quiet, beautiful spot twice and found trails lined with trees, wildflowers and other vegetation. The Flint River runs through the park. There is also a fishing pier and a few logs from a 1920s log cabin at Rossman Lake.

The main trail is well trodden, but there are two smaller trails that are narrower and harder to access due to the dense vegetation and mud in the lower areas. They are also unmarked and there is no map on site, so be sure to take a screenshot from the council website before you go.

Among the animals I saw on my trip was a woodcock, a silly-looking bird with a wobbly-looking body, a long beak, and big, charming eyes that lives in forested areas along rivers. They spend the summer in Michigan before migrating south for the winter. In addition to their unique appearance, woodcocks have huge wings and a penchant for silly movements. This one danced a little along the trail before retreating to a quiet gap in the trees to hide.

I also saw a garter snake.

The park was purchased with grants from the Michigan DNR so that it remains a natural space for everyone to enjoy.
