Annual food collection “Stock Our Shelves” to combat food shortages

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The summer season is often a time when local food pantries reach their lowest inventory levels. The Indian Orchard Community Survival Center hosted its annual “Stock Our Shelves” food drive at various grocery stores in Springfield and Ludlow on Saturday.

The survival center provides packaged food to low-income households throughout the Pioneer Valley and needs the community’s help to keep its shelves stocked, especially during the summer months. The center asked customers to donate canned and nonperishable foods to help those in need.

“We’re seeing more and more people coming to the pantry. Times are tough right now,” explained Mary Cassidy, executive director of the Community Survival Center. “In the last month alone, we’ve seen 34 new households. People who have never been to a pantry in their lives. And many of them are large families. 7, 9, 10. That takes up a lot of our resources.”

The Survival Center also accepts clothing donations in partnership with Planet Aid to keep its thrift store running. All proceeds from the thrift store go towards running the food bank.

If you missed Saturday’s event, the center is always accepting donations and is open for drop-off Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m.
