If you ask Cris Collinsworth, NBC’s Sunday Night Football commentator, it looks like the Detroit Lions have plugged the biggest hole of last year.

It was no secret that the Lions needed to fix their secondary after ranking near the bottom of the NFL in pass defense for several consecutive years.

Lions general manager Brad Holmes decided to address the problem head-on by trading cornerback Carlton Davis III from the Tampa Buccaneers, signing slot corner Amik Robertson as a free agent, and then drafting cornerbacks Terrion Arnold and Ennis Rakestraw Jr. in the first and second rounds.

“It’s still early, but the initial results are extremely positive,” Collinsworth said on the show.

“Well, the one thing that’s impressed me so far is that these new Detroit Lions cornerbacks have done a pretty good job,” Collinsworth said. “That’s always been kind of the Achilles heel for this team, and if they get that right, Aaron Glenn, their defensive coordinator, will be much more confident calling man-to-man defenses now.

“If you’re a Lions fan, this is significant.”

Collinsworth went on to praise some plays by defensive backs Brian Branch and Davis, and just minutes into his brief monologue, the Lions made him sound prophetic.

The Los Angeles Rams and quarterback Matthew Stafford stormed the field and had a chance to tie the game before halftime when safety Kerby Joseph, who led the Lions with four interceptions last year, took potential points off the scoreboard with a key interception.

It is still very early, but so far things are going well for the Lions secondary in their new look.
