How Vikings edge rusher Andrew Van Ginkel reads the Giants defense for a crucial pick-six

How Vikings edge rusher Andrew Van Ginkel reads the Giants defense for a crucial pick-six

EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ – This summer, there was a defenseman in the Vikings ranks who was a fortune teller.

Safety Bobby McCain, a 31-year-old veteran of Brian Flores’ defense dating back to the Miami Dolphins, didn’t join the team until July 29. But from then on, the practice squad defender said, he preached the playmaking abilities of his former Dolphins teammate, edge rusher Andrew Van Ginkel.

Van Ginkel was the star of the dominant Vikings defense in Sunday’s 28-6 win at MetLife Stadium. He helped control the Giants’ helpless offense with a sack, another hit on Giants quarterback Daniel Jones and an interception that led to a 10-yard touchdown.

“The crazy thing is, I told those guys, ‘Man, Gink is going to score a touchdown this year — maybe two,'” McCain told the Minnesota Star Tribune. “I told them I’ve seen that every year I’ve played with Gink. For him to show up in the first game and see his development from when he was a rookie to now, it’s unbelievable.”

Van Ginkel’s touchdown, his fourth in six NFL seasons, started with his head.

Giants quarterback Daniel Jones was at his own 17-yard line and had to fight off seven Vikings defenders who were crowding the line of scrimmage. Van Ginkel was lurking on the right tackle’s side.

On his end, Van Ginkel saw a Giants receiver moving behind a trio of blockers. He figured a block was coming, so when he charged forward, he was ready to pounce on a quick throw, which he caught and ran 10 yards for a touchdown and took a 28-6 lead in the third quarter.

“Most guys just rush the quarterback,” safety Harrison Smith said. “But he knew the ball was probably going to come out, and he was just an athlete. That pretty much decided the game.”
