Shane Beamer recaps South Carolina’s win over Kentucky in Week 2
College GameDay comes to Columbia for a duel between South Carolina And LSU in week 3 and Shane Beamer learned the news in a unique way. The Gamecocks coach revealed in his conference call on Sunday that it was his wife Emily who first alerted him to the news.
Beamer was flying home after a 31-6 win against Kentucky in Lexington on Saturday when his wide receiver first alerted him that the show might be coming to South Carolina. He later confirmed it just before he landed back home.

“I was on the plane and my wife had been talking to somebody who knew somebody who knew somebody,” the coach said. “Something like that. She said, ‘I think you’re getting GameDay.’ I was like, ‘Huh? Do you believe that or do you know that?’ She told me what she’d heard. I found out as we were getting ready to land. I pulled my phone out of my pocket and we hadn’t even landed yet. I was trying to find scores of some conference games because this damn ABC or DirecTV and Disney argument is killing me.
“We’re flying Delta and they have DirecTV, so I couldn’t watch any of the games on the TV in the back of the seat. I really didn’t want to log on to the WiFi and stuff like that. So I watched the NBC that we could get. We need to get this DirecTV dispute resolved please. When I got my phone, I was scrolling through social media and it came up before we hit the ground. So I found out right before landing.”

This is the first time College GameDay has traveled to Columbia in a decade. Beamer has coached the Gamecocks since 2021 and has compiled a record of 22-18 in that time.
For Beamer, it’s his first experience since he was an assistant coach with the Gamecocks in 2010. Now that he’s familiar with this environment as the head coach, he can’t wait to experience it all again.
“Excited,” Beamer said. “I don’t think they would come if they didn’t know what our fan base is and how excited our fan base is going to be to have them here. I’m excited to welcome GameDay here. It’s going to be awesome and pretty cool to have them here.”
“I remember being an assistant coach in 2010 when GameDay was before our game against Alabama. I remember finding out. I was taking a lunch break. I think we had a week off the week before. I walked to Subway and found out my wife called me and told me GameDay was going to be back in 2010. The excitement was great. Last night the excitement was even greater when she told me she thought GameDay was going to be back.”
Kickoff between South Carolina and LSU is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. ET on Saturday at Williams-Brice Stadium.
Shane Beamer discusses the impact of College GameDay on recruiting
Beamer hopes hosting College GameDay can be an opportunity for South Carolina to welcome recruits in a great atmosphere. The Gamecocks have taken on the No. 10 class in the 2024 cycle according to On3 industry ranking and hope to increase these numbers soon.
“This is going to be huge,” Beamer said of hosting College Gameday. “We definitely had a lot of newcomers that were already planning on coming to this game. That’s the great thing about yesterday. Nothing against Notre Dame-Northern Illinois or Iowa-Iowa State, but I think those were really the only other two games yesterday because I think ESPN had the U.S. Open on tennis yesterday. So there weren’t a lot of opportunities to watch college football at 3:30 yesterday, so a lot of eyes were on us. After that game, there was already a lot of interest from newcomers wanting to come to this game on Saturday, and after yesterday, there’s certainly a lot more that want to be here on Saturday.
“It’s going to be a great showcase for our program, for our university, for the city of Columbia and for our fan base. So from a player acquisition standpoint, it’s going to be great. We’ve got to play well. But the way I look at it is that hopefully this will be the first of many, many times that GameDay will be here as long as I’m the head coach at South Carolina.”
