After the surprising loss to the New England Patriots in the season opener, Ja’Marr Chase, wide receiver of the Cincinnati Bengals, consistently referred all questions to head coach Zac Taylor.

In one of these questions, Chase was asked if his participation might be limited due to his lack of participation in practice since his “hold-in” during training camp.

His response, via CLNS Media’s Michael Petragliaactually said it all: “You’ll have to ask (head coach) Zac (Taylor).”

And when asked about the slow starts, the frustration was clearly expressed by Jeremy Rauch of Fox 19: “I feel like we always start like this – especially the first game of the year. We should be doing better by now.”

Chase cited the difference in turnovers in the game as a major reason for the loss, which makes sense since his team lost two fumbles and the Patriots didn’t lose the ball at all.

When asked why these teething issues, which the team has been talking about for months, keep cropping up, Chase replied, according to Rauch, “I don’t know, man. Ask Zac.”

Chase played 40 of the team’s 48 snaps and caught all six passes, making him the team’s leading pass receiver with 62 yards. But it was an oddly subdued day for the offense as a whole, with Joe Burrow barely carrying the ball down the field, so many things likely contributed to Chase’s limited action.

That means the team still has a lot to figure out on offense. Unfortunately, Chase’s contract situation remains part of that discussion for now.
