Why are apple juices being recalled?

According to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the apple juices are being recalled because they contain levels of inorganic arsenic that exceed the limit set by industry guidelines.

Why is arsenic dangerous?

Arsenic is a metal that can occur in both organic and inorganic forms. Chemically speaking, this means whether the compound contains carbon atoms or not.

Organic arsenic, which contains carbon atoms, is not dangerous to humans and is commonly found in seafood. However, inorganic arsenic can be highly toxic and is typically found in contaminated drinking water.

According to the FDA, long-term exposure to inorganic arsenic in adults is associated with skin disorders, an increased risk of skin, bladder and lung cancer, and cardiovascular disease. Short-term exposure can cause nausea, vomiting, bruising, and numbness or burning in the hands and feet.

Inorganic arsenic is also a confirmed carcinogen, i.e. a substance that can cause cancer, and is, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), “a chemical contaminant of drinking water worldwide”.
