Dan Campbell gave Jared Goff a funny compliment for his performance on the field

Dan Campbell gave Jared Goff a funny compliment for his performance on the field

The Detroit Lions beat the Los Angeles Rams 26-20 in overtime on Sunday night. The Lions blew a 17-3 lead but came back to force overtime with a field goal with 17 seconds left. The Lions then won the coin toss and stormed down the field to score the game-winning touchdown on the first and only possession of overtime.

After the game, Lions coach Dan Campbell gave one of his patented locker room speeches that had players and spectators running through the wall of a chain restaurant. Campbell’s message was simple: Winning a game in the NFL is good and you have to keep working to get better. He also praised several key performances, including that of quarterback Jared Goff.

While Goff’s performance didn’t shine on the scoreboard or in the scoresheet, he did win the coin toss to start overtime, which Campbell specifically addressed.

“Defense, we held on. Fox, what an outstanding punt that helped our defense. And offense, we’re doing what we have to do to get to overtime. And then we win the coin toss. Goff, great job. We’re going to the end. That’s a damn good win.”

If you’re wondering why everyone laughed when Campbell complimented Goff, it’s because he didn’t actually win the coin toss. Matthew Stafford lost the coin toss by calling heads and the coin landed tails up.

And yet Goff was allowed to bask in the glory of victory after telling the referee that the free kick would go to the Lions.

That’s what makes Campbell so great. He never misses an opportunity to build his guys up or take things easy. As long as you do your job, that’s all he cares about. Even if sometimes your job is nothing more than saying you’ll take the ball when someone else is on the wrong side of a 50/50 guess.
