Cooper Kupp reaches a total of 120 yards in opening loss against the Lions

On Friday, the veteran wide receiver said it’s been “a while” since he started a season as healthy as he is now. He proved that on Sunday night, posting 14 catches, 110 receiving yards and a touchdown, as well as 10 rushing yards. He was targeted on 42.9% of Stafford’s pass attempts, but the Rams couldn’t pull off a win, losing 26-20 to the Lions in overtime.

This was the 32nd 100-yard receiving game of Kupp’s illustrious career and his first since December 17 of last year. His 14 catches matched his career high in a game and it was the 12th time in his career that he caught at least 10 balls.

Kupp was the motion man quite often throughout the night, as the Rams utilized pre-snap motion on most of their offensive plays. According to Next Gen Stats, Kupp was in motion on 42 snaps, including 12 touches, the most of any player in a game over the past seven seasons.

Stafford was able to gain insight into defensive coverage through this movement, and he and Kupp took advantage. Kupp settled into defensive zones in the middle of the field and stayed on the sideline on outside routes throughout the game while Stafford fed passes to him.

“That’s what I’ve seen in practice,” Stafford said of Kupp. “That’s how I know him…I’d love to see how many yards he ran today…We ask him to move all over the place and handle a whole lot of things, both in the passing game and the running game, and he runs that space really well.”

To answer Stafford’s question, Next Gen Stats has tracked that Kupp has totaled 436 yards before the snap, the second-most yards in a game of any player since 2018. That puts him behind only himself in Week 14 of 2023.

But it wasn’t just about short outs and hitch routes, Kupp’s abilities as a route runner were also on full display. On the Rams’ second drive of the second half, Kupp tripped up rookie cornerback Terrion Arnold on a comeback route that gained him 21 yards.
