The Bears are very concerned about rookie wide receiver Rome Odunze after he suffered a knee injury in the season opener against the Titans.
Odunze played 77% of the snaps in Sunday’s 24-17 win, had one catch for 11 yards and showed no signs of injury. He didn’t show any signs of a problem when speaking to reporters afterward.
Bears coach Matt Eberflus said Monday that Odunze injured his knee while blocking and that an MRI scan was scheduled for the same day.
“I don’t know exactly when it happened,” he said. “I think it was a blocking play. I didn’t see it on film. We’ll see where it is and hopefully he’s OK.”
Eberflus said he did not have “enough information yet” and would provide an update on Wednesday.
Odunze was considered a key weapon for the Bears after they drafted him No. 9 this year. Last season, he led the country in receiving yards in Washington.
Veteran receivers Keenan Allen and DJ Moore also suffered injuries during the game and continued playing. Both appeared to have leg injuries, but the Bears never reported anything and Eberflus downplayed those issues on Monday.
Still, injuries meant that returner DeAndre Carter played only 23% of offensive plays. The Bears cut second-year receiver Tyler Scott.
Amid the turmoil, rookie quarterback Caleb Williams completed just 14 of 29 passes for 92 yards in his debut. The competition will increase significantly this week with a visit to the Texans for Sunday Night Football.
On a day where the offense was weak, the defensive line did an excellent job of keeping the Bears in the game and giving them the lead, earning the position an A.
