Apple has announced the iPhone 16, the latest version of its flagship smartphone. The iPhone 16 comes in a range of slightly refreshed colors that are more vibrant compared to previous years. Also refreshed is the updated dual camera setup on the back, which is once again arranged vertically, as last seen on 2020’s iPhone 12.

The iPhone 16 features a number of new hardware improvements, including a new A18 chip with a 3nm process that is 30 percent faster than the iPhone 15’s CPU, an action button introduced on last year’s Pro models, and a new physical camera control button below the power button.

The iPhone 16 will be Apple’s first mainstream phone to use Apple Intelligence in beta, after an update came out in October. The company first unveiled the AI ​​software at WWDC, where it was initially reserved only for the iPhone 15 Pro models. While Apple teased many of Apple Intelligence’s upcoming features already shown at WWDC (like custom emojis and the ability to summarize texts or emails), it did unveil a new Google Lens-like search feature called Visual Intelligence that will allow an iPhone 16 user to search for information based on what the camera sees.

Speaking of cameras: The iPhone 16’s dual setup, consisting of a 48-megapixel main camera and an ultra-wide-angle camera with autofocus, offers the “equivalent” of four lenses via a 2x crop mode and a macro mode (further improvements from the current Pro iPhone models).

Again, the standard iPhone will feature a 6.1-inch screen, while the larger iPhone 16 Plus will have a 6.7-inch display—the same dimensions as the iPhone 15 generation. However, the iPhone 16 generation screens can reach a peak brightness of 2,000 nits and dim down to 1 nit.

The 16 follows the same general design as the 15, with a squared-off frame, glass on the back that allows for wireless charging with MagSafe, Apple’s Dynamic Island cutout on top to house the front-facing camera and Face ID sensors, and a USB-C charging/data port on the bottom. While the return to vertically aligned lenses on the back may seem like an odd iteration of a design element Apple abandoned, the step back makes sense for better spatial video support on the Apple Vision Pro.

The iPhone 16 starts at $799 with 128GB of storage and the iPhone 16 Plus starts at $899 with the same storage configuration.
