Jets vs. 49ers live updates: Aaron Rodgers returns to field after torn Achilles tendon, while Christian McCaffrey is out

For the second year in a row, the New York Jets open their season on Monday Night Football, and while they’d love to start with a win over a Super Bowl contender – like they did last year when they beat the Buffalo Bills – they’d prefer to have their future Hall of Fame quarterback make more than just four plays.

The Jets are in the Bay Area to face the defending NFC champion San Francisco 49ers, hoping to finally usher in the Aaron Rodgers era. After tearing an Achilles tendon in the first game last year, the Jets were plagued with poor quarterback play all season and finished the season 7-10.

The 49ers had a very different season, with both Brock Purdy and Christian McCaffrey finishing in the top five for MVP and narrowly missing the Super Bowl. They lost in overtime to the Chiefs after San Francisco won the NFC West for the third time in an 11-6 season under Kyle Shanahan. San Francisco will begin the season without McCaffrey, who is out with a strained calf.
