Camera footage shows police pulling Tyreek Hill out of the car

MIAMI – Recently released bodycam footage of the arrest of Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill shows Miami-Dade police officers dragging the star player from his car, forcing him to the sidewalk and then handcuffing him.

The footage shows Hill was first stopped for speeding on Sunday as he approached Hard Rock Stadium. It was about a minute after the officer got off his motorcycle and walked toward Hill’s car before he was forcibly pulled out.

When the officer arrived, he knocked on Hill’s car window, at which point Hill rolled down the window, gave the officer his driver’s license, and repeatedly asked him not to knock on his window. The footage also shows the officer telling Hill to keep the window closed. The incident escalated when Hill did not comply.

Hill said to the cop, “Give me my ticket, brother, and I can go. I’m late. Do what you have to do,” and rolled his window back up.

“Keep the window down,” the officer said, tapping on the window. The officer paused for about five seconds and looked around. He again told Hill to keep the window down or “I’m going to get you out of the car. So, get out of the car.”

After the officer finally ordered Hill to step out of his vehicle, Hill said, “I’m getting out, I’m getting out.” As the officer opened the door and took Hill out, the recipient said, “I’m getting out!” At that moment, another officer grabbed Hill by the back of his head and neck area and forced him to step onto the sidewalk to be handcuffed.

“It just went from 0 to 60, man, from the moment those guys pulled up behind me and knocked on my window, it went from 0 to 60 immediately,” Hill said in an interview with NBC Nightly News on Monday.

“I opened the door and was about to get out, you know what I mean, but I felt like they wanted me to hurry up.”

Hill was able to call Dolphins director of security Drew Brooks before he was dragged from his car. The officer who forced Hill to the ground pinned him down with a knee on Hill’s back and told Hill to “stop crying.”

“If we tell you to do something, you do it, you understand?” the officer said to Hill. “Not when you want to, but when we tell you. You’re a little confused.”

Hill was led to the sidewalk and told to sit down. Hill then responded that he had recently undergone knee surgery and asked the officers to “hold on.” The same officer who had pulled Hill from his vehicle, who was not the officer closest to Hill, then lunged at Hill, put his arms around his shoulders and forced him to the ground again, placing his hands around Hill’s neck at one point.

The officer was skeptical about Hill’s operation.

“Oh really? What a coincidence,” he said to Hill. “Were you having ear surgery when we told you to roll down the window?”

Dolphins tight end Jonnu Smith witnessed the scene and parked his vehicle a few feet away from Hill. When he saw Hill being pushed to the ground, he rushed out of his car. Officers immediately asked Smith to back up and show identification, which he did.

Smith remained about 25 feet away from Hill throughout the recording and was eventually issued a summons.

Dolphins defensive lineman Calais Campbell arrived at the scene shortly afterward and was also asked to leave. Campbell approached officers with his arms raised.

At one point, one of the officers responding to the call appeared to recognize who Hill was, although neither Hill nor Campbell admitted they were Dolphins players.

“You know who that is, right?” the officer asked. “One of the Dolphins’ star players.”

Campbell was eventually arrested while an officer held the seated Hill with one hand on his shoulder.

When Hill complained about being held in place, the officer forced him to the ground before allowing him to sit up again.

“I’ll put it to you this way: Your job is to serve and protect, right?” Hill said. “You’re doing a terrible job of protecting right now. I told you I’m not going to run away… That’s only going to make things worse.”

Hill verbally complied with officers’ commands throughout the recording. At least one officer attempted to talk some sense into Hill and deescalate the situation while bystanders filmed the incident from both the sidewalk and their vehicles.

“I’m just a black man, that’s all,” Hill shouted. “I’m just a black man in America.”

“We’re dark-skinned too, brother,” an officer replied. “We’re colored people too. Don’t act like that’s something special.”

Hill was released after about 25 minutes when Brooks and Hill’s agent, Drew Rosenhaus, arrived. The audio cuts out several times, but in one shot, Hill is heard telling officers he would “see you all in court” before getting back into his vehicle.

“If I wasn’t Tyreek Hill, God knows, the worst that could happen is I would have been shot or incarcerated” and “ended up behind bars, you know, for a simple speeding ticket,” Hill told NBC News.

Hill caught seven passes for 130 yards and an 80-yard touchdown in the Dolphins’ win over the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday.

After scoring a goal, he poked fun at that morning’s incident by putting his hands behind his back and allowing teammate Jaylen Waddle to “hold him” as they returned to his team’s sideline.

Speaking to NBC News about the celebration, Hill said, “You learn to laugh and have fun.”

On Monday night, the Dolphins released a statement saying the team was “saddened by the overly aggressive and violent behavior directed at Tyreek Hill, Calais Campbell and Jonnu Smith,” adding, “It is both upsetting and heartbreaking to see the very people we trust to protect our community use such unnecessary violence and hostility toward these players. But it is also a reminder that not every situation like this ends peacefully, and we are grateful that this situation did. ‘What if I wasn’t Tyreek Hill?’ is a question that will resonate.”

The statement added that the franchise “is proud of its strong and positive relationship with the Miami-Dade Police Department and other law enforcement agencies and recognizes that the vast majority of officers serve the community with the utmost strength of character and a desire to protect all citizens. However, as is evident in the videos released tonight, there are some officers who confuse their responsibility and commitment to duty with misguided power. While we commend the MDPD for taking the proper and necessary action to quickly release this footage, we also urge them to take equally swift and decisive action against the officers who engaged in such despicable conduct.”

“We will stand by Tyreek and our players as they seek to use their platform and this situation to make a positive impact on our community. We have always believed that football has a unique power to bring people together and we remain hopeful that through the collective work of the players, the organization and our community partners, we can create lasting change.”

The South Florida Police Benevolent Association had previously released a statement – before the bodycam footage became public – saying that Hill had been “uncooperative” with police officers.

“Before yesterday’s Dolphins game, an incident occurred in which Tyreek Hill was handcuffed and released. First of all, to be clear, he was not under arrest at any time. He was briefly detained for safety reasons after driving in a manner that placed himself and others in grave danger,” Steadman Stahl, president of the South Florida Police Benevolent Association, said in a statement.

“After being stopped, Mr. Hill did not immediately cooperate with the police officers on the scene, who handcuffed Mr. Hill as per protocol and for their immediate safety. Mr. Hill, still not cooperating, refused to sit on the ground and was therefore ordered back to the ground,” Stahl added.

Stahl said on the Andy Slater Show that Hill had “escalated” the situation and that the matter would have been over sooner if Hill had given in.
