White Castle joins the price war in the fast food market

White Castle joins the price war in the fast food market

The impending end of summer apparently brings with it a new round of fast food bargains.

Shortly after introducing a $10 special at Jimmy John’s, White Castle has negotiated a deal that will see the burger chain offer its lowest prices since 2011.

Customers can now get a bag of 10 cheese sliders for $7.99. The offer was first introduced in St. Louis to celebrate White Castle’s 99th anniversary in that market, but was so popular that the company expanded it nationwide.

“Families around the world are tired of almost always needing a small loan to buy fast food, and we know our customers today want to make every penny count,” said Jamie Richardson, vice president of White Castle, in a press release.

Wannabe Harolds and Kumars will have three flavors to choose from for the slider bags: American, smoked cheddar and jalapeño. The company did not disclose how long the offer would last.

2024 was the summer of price-cutting at fast-food chains as the companies try to win back customers frustrated by inflationary pressures at the drive-thru. This year saw many claims of “McFlation,” following reports of something like $8 chicken sandwiches and $18 Big Mac meals. (McDonald’s CEO Joe Erlinger addressed this last month, issuing a public letter to counter the “viral social media posts and poorly researched reports that McDonald’s has raised prices well above the rate of inflation.”)

McDonald’s has been offering a $5 meal at most stores nationwide since June and has extended availability through at least the end of this month. Wendy’s and Burger King, as well as several other chains, have offered their own deals.

McDonald’s reported a decline in like-for-like sales last week for the first time since 2020.
