Israeli evacuation orders and attacks leave no safe place for Gaza residents

Israeli evacuation orders and attacks leave no safe place for Gaza residents

The incessant Israeli evacuation orders and attacks have made the entire Gaza Strip uninhabitable and forced millions of Palestinians to flee again and again.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) on Thursday called on residents to leave parts of the southern Gaza Strip, including central and eastern Khan Younis. A day earlier, they issued two separate orders for several districts in northern Gaza, ordering residents to move to the so-called “humanitarian zone” in the west of the coastal enclave.

The Israeli military said the purpose of the evacuation was to conduct massive military operations against local Palestinian armed groups.

A China Central Television (CCTV) correspondent reached the eastern district of Khan Younis on Friday, where thousands of Palestinians with bags full of belongings were fighting their way through the rubble to the Al-Mawasi area west of the city.

These people, who had returned to their homes only a few days ago, fled again out of fear of an unknown fate.

“This is the third time I have been displaced in a short period of time and the sixth time since the current phase of the conflict began, as is the case for many people. We had only been back home for five days when suddenly we were told to leave again,” Hani Al-Fajm, a displaced Palestinian, told CCTV.

“This is my eighth move. It’s only been a week since I returned home to rebuild. But I don’t think I’ll ever find my house again,” said Maha Freih, another displaced Palestinian, in tears.

According to a report released on Friday by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), up to 1.9 million people, or 90 percent of the population, have been declared internally displaced throughout the Gaza Strip.

Philippe Lazzarini, UNRWA Commissioner-General, said on social media on July 29 that only 14 percent of the areas in the Gaza Strip were not under Israel’s evacuation order, sparking chaos and panic and affecting almost everyone in the enclave.

“We are subjected to terrible humiliation and suffering. We do not know where to go. There is no safe place in the entire Gaza Strip. Anyone who dares to claim that there is a safe zone is a liar,” said Freih.

At least 100 people were killed and dozens more injured in an Israeli attack on a school that serves as shelter for around 3,500 displaced people in the Gaza Strip on Saturday.

Palestinian medical and security sources said Israeli warplanes attacked the Al-Taba’een school in the Al-Daraj neighborhood of central Gaza while the displaced people were praying Fajr prayers inside the school. Women and children were among the casualties, they added.

A China Media Group (CMG) correspondent arrived on Saturday and saw that the floor and walls were scorched by fire. The smell of blood was in the air inside the school.

“I saw children, adults and the elderly being torn to pieces by the bomb. I looked around but could not find my father. There was a big fire. We were all very scared. My father, my grandfather and my uncle are all dead. I am really scared and nervous,” said Muhammad Al-Bashuni, a survivor.

“I was sleeping and my friend woke me up to pray, so I got up. I was taking off my coat when suddenly there were sounds of explosions. I saw smoke and fire everywhere. There were dead bodies everywhere. It was absolutely horrific,” said Youssef Al-Safadi, another survivor lying in a hospital bed.

The local civil protection agency had discovered 93 bodies, but there were still more on site. Rescue workers said they would continue their work.

“Many people are still missing. They may have disappeared in the explosions or be buried under the rubble. The rescue team is using all means to continue the search,” said Mahmoud Basal, spokesman for civil defense in the Gaza Strip.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said in a statement that the school grounds serve as a Hamas and Islamic Jihad military facility and that about 20 Hamas and Islamic Jihad fighters, including high-ranking commanders, are active there.
