Eugene and Dan Levy talk about father-son chemistry and arguments before hosting the Emmys

Eugene and Dan Levy, the father-son stars of “Schitt’s Creek” who enjoyed huge success at the 2020 Emmy Awards four years ago, are returning to the show, this time as hosts.

Before their primetime appearance, the two sat down with ABC News’ Chris Connelly to discuss the big event as part of a “20/20” special called “The 76th Emmys: A Night of Premieres” with Robin Roberts, airing Friday, September 13 at 8 p.m. ET.

“That means we’re first, right?” Eugene said when asked what it meant to be part of the first father-son duo to host the show.

“Yeah, I don’t know. I think when you’re preparing for this thing, you can’t think too much about the first things,” added son Dan. “My biggest obstacle was fear. And I think if fear is your biggest obstacle, you have to do it,” he said of the decision to host the event.

“I told my wife we were asked to host. She said, ‘You’re not doing that,'” Eugene recalled, laughing. “It was a kind of tension that drew us into it, right, I mean, the challenge,” he added.

Dan explained what the couple’s main goal is before the ceremony.

“The challenge is not to embarrass yourself on national television in front of millions and millions of people,” he said.

The father-son duo best described their chemistry as a constant, humorous and confrontational back and forth.

“Bickering,” Dan said when asked how the two communicate.

“Yeah. It’s kind of a back and forth argument. It’s a general lack of respect,” Eugene said.

“I think we’re lucky that we have the chemistry that makes it work at an awards show,” Dan added.

Eugene recalled how Dan developed his comedic talent as a child – talent that helped “Schitt’s Creek” win nine Emmy awards. “Eventually he found it. He found his comedic voice,” said Eugene, 77. “He could amaze the family with a single word or phrase.”

Dan, 41, said it was this real family dynamic that contributed to the success of “Schitt’s Creek.”

“I remember understanding what really drove my father to the brink of insanity and using that as much as possible in our show.”

Eugene and Dan also raised the possibility of some fan favorites from “Schitt’s Creek” — the final season of which aired in 2020 — reappearing at the Emmys.

“That may be a possibility at this point,” Eugene said. “You might see them, just in a way you don’t expect,” Dan added with a wink.

At the 76th Emmy Awards, some of the biggest television series compete for trophies. “Shōgun” is the most nominated series this year with a total of 25 nominations. Close behind are “The Bear” with 23 nominations and “Only Murders in the Building” with 21 nominations.

Dan said they would host the event with “heart and kindness,” but noted that they would focus on “not losing the standard of what people expect from a host.”

“We have to be funny,” Eugene added. “We really hope it’s just a fun vibe.”

“For me personally, comedy is all about: If I go down, I want to take someone with me,” he joked.
