Dan and Eugene Levy Share How They’re Preparing to Host the 2024 Emmys (Exclusive)

Dan and Eugene Levy Share How They’re Preparing to Host the 2024 Emmys (Exclusive)

There will be some surprises at the 2024 Emmy Awards, as Eugene Levy and Dan Levy will be the first father-son duo to host this year’s show.

It’s their first time hosting and the fun couple are more than ready for the responsibility.

“My dad and I aren’t stand-up comedians, so we have a very different approach,” 41-year-old Dan tells PEOPLE in the current issue. “But we both work really hard and are determined to make it as great as possible. We want to create an atmosphere where you feel really welcome and celebratory. This is a big night in so many people’s lives and we just want to be there to make it as celebratory as possible for everyone.”

It’s a thoughtful moment for 77-year-old Eugene. “As this is our first time, we hope this year’s show will provide enough laughs, charm, goodwill and love for the medium that got my son and me started in this business,” he says.

“Schitt’s Creek”.

Decency

The duo played the lead role in the hit comedy Schitt’s Creek from 2015-2020 and are no strangers to the Emmys stage. Eugene won two trophies for SCTV Network 90 and two for Schitts Creek, while Dan won four as writer, director, supporting actor and creator for Schitt’s Creek.

Although this is their first time hosting, they are not relying on tips from previous hosts. Eugene explains: “We work with some very funny writers who seem to be on the same wavelength as our sensibilities. Daniel and I have spent a number of years writing comedy, by the way, so I think we’re all doing well so far.”

When asked who sends more messages to each other, Eugene says, “My son. He’s a perfectionist.”

Dan tells a slightly different story: “We both send the same amount of email, he’s just not as good at email as I am. So we have a few technical issues, but that’s totally fine.”

The two also chose a slightly different look for the evening. Dan says there might be a few different suits. “I just figure, if you have the option, why the hell not?”

“I told my dad early on, ‘I think I’m going to change it during the show.’ And he said, ‘Have fun.’ I’ll do all the costume changes and he’ll be my rock,” Dan adds.

As Eugene puts it, “I won’t even try to compete with my son in fashion.”

The task of hosting is no small feat, but knowing that they can support each other makes things even more enjoyable.

“That was the big, compelling element of the whole thing: knowing that we’re supporting each other up there. I think we have such good chemistry together that it just takes the edge off the intimidation of the process,” says Dan. “We’ll have a nice little fun banter back and forth throughout the evening.”

Eugene adds: “We worked so well together as a team (at the opening of the 2020 SAG Awards), not to mention the six years we worked together on Schitt’s Creekand we hope that chemistry will be very present on stage at the Emmys.”

But the nerves still remain. Dan deals with it by staying calm. “I’m worried and I think the worst thing I can do in this situation is worry too much. Hopefully then we’ll be prepared and won’t have to worry anymore.”

“This is new for me. I’m trying something new where I don’t have to think too much and worry,” he adds.

“For me, it’s yoga and meditation before the big show,” Eugene notes. “And if you think that, you don’t really know who I am.”
