A Lichfield Parker native features on a GCU album

Grand Canyon University’s Worship Arts program has released its eighth album, “Canyon Worship 2024.” Among the artists featured is Litchfield Park native Edwin Lopez, who appears on the fifth track, “Home.”

Lopez wrote, performed and recorded the song with another student, Trina Beecher. “Home” is an acoustic song with harmonies that highlight the relationship between the singers and the security they draw from their religion.

“All of creation is amazing, but not as amazing as you,” sing Lopez and Beecher, “you are my home.”

“Home” follows the structure of a traditional worship song, with lyrics leading to a long, repeating chorus that the listener is meant to learn before the song ends.

The album features 10 new songs, all written and performed by GCU students and recorded in the university’s recording studio.

A single from the album will be released every month starting in September 2023, with the final single being released in July. With the release of the full album, the Worship Arts program also released chord charts and lyric sheets to make the songs easy to learn and use.

“There was a lot of collaboration in the songwriting efforts this year,” said Eric Johnson, GCU recording studio director. “Students came together to collaborate on these songs, which in turn produced some of the best songs in the Canyon Worship album catalog to date.”

GCU is a private Christian university in Phoenix. The GCU website states that the university is built on Christian ethics and works to integrate them into academics and campus life. The Center for Worship Arts teaches students theology and drama using curricula from the College of Theology to prepare artists to become worship leaders in intimate settings.

The album is available to stream on Apple Music, Spotify and Amazon Music.
