This morning, several of PC Gamer’s fine writers (myself included) were staring at the description of a store page for Red Dead Redemption on the PlayStation website, trying to figure out why we were seeing a proud, boastful announcement of a PC port of Red Dead Redemption—a game that hasn’t been released on PC since its debut in 2010—because, well, it was on the PlayStation 4 store page.
It’s now been removed, but I luckily had the means to take a screenshot of my own – mind you, we only looked at the damn thing because there were such lightning-quick observers as the prolific, sharp-eyed industry tweeter Wario64. That said, unless we were having a collective hallucination, I can absolutely confirm that the store page said the following:
“Experience the epic Western adventures that defined a generation – now for the first time ever on PC.” The non-announcement then goes on to say that the port will include both the 2010 Red Dead Redemption base game and the Undead Nightmare expansion.
“Red Dead Redemption offers the complete single-player experience of both games, including bonus content from the Game of the Year Edition, all upgrades from the 2023 console version, and PC-specific improvements including support for higher resolutions and frame rates, multiple displays and other accessories, and spatial surround sound.”
The only exception to this wealth of features is the lack of multiplayer content – which is a shame, but is in line with the lack of online support for the PS4 version released last year.
The “announcement” itself is a real mystery. If a PC port is in the works, why would there be such a misunderstanding that the announcement would be posted on the PlayStation Store page? Rockstar is owned by Take-Two Interactive, not Sony, so if the studio wanted to keep the announcement quiet, I don’t know why it would send out press releases to its peers. There’s also the hilarious alternative that Sony made it up when the news broke – in which case: oops.
While we’ve seen data-mined information over the past few months that strongly suggests a port, there’s no guarantee the thing is even coming soon – it’s entirely possible that someone at Rockstar, Sony, or their PR company designed this copy months in advance and it just showed up by pure coincidence.
It’s also fascinating how this sort of thing keeps happening with storefronts – not leaks necessarily, but weird inconsistencies and glitches of all kinds. Take Silksong, whose release date on the Microsoft Store was in 9998 for months without anyone noticing. Two-Point Campus was also leaked on the same store a while back. I’ve reached out to Rockstar for comment and will update this article with any response.
