EAST BRUNSWICK – A Walmart store in Middlesex County Township had to be evacuated Thursday afternoon due to a swatting incident, according to township police.

On August 8, shortly before 3 p.m., East Brunswick Police received a 911 call reporting a bomb in the men’s restroom at the Walmart Supercenter on Route 18.

As a precautionary measure, the store was evacuated while police, assisted by a canine unit from the Middlesex County Sheriff’s Office, searched the property.

There was no bomb or threat present and it was believed to be a swatting incident.

The term “swatting” refers to a prank call to emergency services, usually reporting an immediate threat to human life. The goal is to send the police and a SWAT team to a specific location.

The incident remains under investigation.
