The Rockies failed in the Bronx. Wait, look at this. They was bombed in the Bronx.
Juan Soto, Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton – the Yankees’ 2024 version of Murderers’ Row – hit back-to-back solo home runs in the seventh inning against rookie relief pitcher Jeff Criswell. In total, New York hit five home runs and humiliated the Rockies 10-3.
Judge, who has hit 51 home runs, also hit a two-run homer in the first off of left-hander Austin Gomber. Gomber opened his start by walking Gleyber Torres, and yes, the walk would come back to haunt him.
Until New York’s pyrotechnics in the seventh, the Rockies had a chance to win the game and win just their third road series of the season. In the fifth, Ryan McMahon broke out of his slump and hit a two-out double to right field to bring home Brenton Doyle from first base, cutting the Yankees’ lead to 4-3.
But then came New York’s three home runs in the seventh inning, followed by a three-run home run by Torres in the eighth inning against left-hander Lucas Gilbreath.
The Rockies were on pace to lose 103 games, finishing 2-4 in their six road games. Their run differential is minus-208, by far the worst in the National League.
Gomber struggled early on, allowing two runs in the first inning and two more in the second, but he turned things around and pitched four scoreless innings.
The Yankees threatened to sweep Gomber off the mound in the fifth inning, loading the bases with walks by Soto and Judge and a bloop single by Stanton. But Gomber held firm, striking out Jazz Chisholm and getting Anthony Volpe to make a groundout to shortstop.
In six innings, Gomber allowed four runs on six hits, had three walks and one strikeout. After 25 starts, he is 4-9 with a 4.70 ERA.
Rookie catcher Drew Romo, who is getting a lot of playing time, hit an RBI single in the fourth inning to score Jake Cave, the first RBI of Romo’s career.
