Michigan was at the season opener against State of Fresno as the Wolverines only led 10-3 at halftime and did not dominate at the lines of scrimmage as they normally do under Jim Harbaugh.

ESPN Analyst Kirk Herbstreit came to SportsCenter on Saturday morning and shared that he expects a different version of Michigan on Saturday when the Wolverines host Texas.

“You know, I think there were some teams in Week 1 that maybe peaked in Week 2. I think Michigan is an example of that team,” Herbstreit said. “They played Fresno State, a new era, a lot of the leadership from a year ago was gone.”

“I think you’re going to see a completely different Michigan team defensively tonight against Texas. I think they’re going to play outstanding. I think the fans behind them, the energy and the fact that they’re underdogs at home has motivated Michigan. I’d be shocked if they didn’t play great on that side of the football.”

Michigan and Texas both look very different this season than they did a year ago. Yes, they have some key players back, but they also lost a lot of talent to the NFL.

Kirk Herbstreit explained how a Texans offense with a number of new playmakers around the quarterback Quinn Ewers can try to attack the Wolverines.

“Michigan has the best tandem of defensive tackles in all of college football. So Texas has to do well to get the ball out on the perimeter,” said Herbstreit. “Whether it’s those quick throws, whether it’s about Jaydon Blue to the outside to pull the defense apart and get them running. Wink Martindale is an offensive and defensive minded coach.”

Herbstreit also shared which pass catchers could step in for Texas against Michigan after the Longhorns lost Xavier Worthy, Adonai Mitchell, Ja’Tavion Sanders And Jordan Whittington for the 2024 NFL Draft.

“Here are the names – Isaiah Bondthe from Alabama is a guy to keep an eye on today. Ryan Wingohe’s a true freshman. True freshmen can really grow up in this atmosphere, so remember the name Ryan Wingo,” Herbstreit said. “You see, they have a lot of guys. Like you said, they’re missing so many from a year ago, led by Xavier Worthy.

“It’s the next wave, not just for Michigan, but for Texas. I think that’s what makes college football so exciting. We have such a big matchup in Week 2 and we’ll get to see a lot of new personalities and see who can impress on that big stage.”
