According to the hurricane center, a tropical depression could form in the Caribbean next week

A tropical depression could form in the Caribbean next week. It is not yet possible to say what effects it might have, but initial models show favorable results for Florida, experts say.

The National Hurricane Center is monitoring three systems Friday evening – one in the Caribbean and two in the Atlantic.

Of interest is an extended low pressure system in the Caribbean, which has increased its chance of strengthening over the past two days. It has a 60 percent chance of developing into a tropical depression within the next seven days, up from 40 percent on Thursday evening.

Meteorologists expect a low-pressure system could form as the system slowly moves across the northwestern Caribbean and then into the southern Gulf of Mexico early to mid-next week.

It is unclear where the system will move if it develops into a tropical depression, but initial computer models show a wide range of possibilities.

However, WPLG-ABC 10 chief forecaster Michael Lowery said Friday that early trends indicate the storm is unlikely to reach South Florida, but that could change over the weekend.

“While it’s far too early to say exactly where the system might move next week, early trends have been favorable for at least South Florida and the easternmost Gulf Coast,” he said in his blog. “Nevertheless, it’s still early and everyone along the Gulf Coast should check out the forecast trends again this weekend and early next week as forecast models become more predictive of the system’s future.”

Meteorologists observe two more systems

The hurricane center is also monitoring the remnants of Gordon, more than 1,000 miles southwest of the Azores, and a low pressure area located about 675 miles northeast of the northeastern Caribbean.

Both systems have a 10 percent chance of strengthening in the next two to seven days.
