Adam Ondra on the 6th place at the Olympics and his bitterness

Adam Ondra on the 6th place at the Olympics and his bitterness

The Paris 2024 Olympic Games have come to an end. Janja Garnbret and Toby Roberts won gold in the women’s and men’s combined categories. Find out more about some of the highlights from the Olympics here.

One of the favorites in the final was Czech superstar Adam Ondra, who seemed ready to surpass his performance from the Tokyo Olympics and potentially finish on the podium. However, despite a strong lead round, his bouldering round was not good enough to win a medal.

Ondra broke his silence on Instagram today, four days after the finals, saying: “Every sporting event produces only one winner, only three medalists and many ‘losers’, which is the unforgiving nature of sport. I feel like the Olympics are even tougher because the competition itself feels so important to each individual competitor and that ‘loss’ has an even more bitter aftertaste than any other competition. It feels even more bitter in our sport, where many of my generation didn’t really get the chance to compete in the Olympics in their late teens or early twenties.”

Climbing will be part of the Olympics again in 2028, when the games are held in LA. It’s too early to say who will qualify from Paris, but there’s a good chance some of the most touted “big” climbers won’t have what it takes to compete against the next generation of competitors.
