Airport Sorgho Chief Thompson inducted into KY Firefighter Association Hall of Fame

Airport-Sorgho Fire Chief Pat Thompson is the newest member of the Kentucky Firefighters Association Hall of Fame after 39 years of service.

Thompson began as a volunteer firefighter at the age of 19. He quickly fell in love with the field and built a career as a firefighter in Henderson, where he retired after 20 years of service. He has been a volunteer firefighter in Daviess County ever since.

In addition to his local work, he was also active at the state level, building a network throughout Kentucky and advocating for fire service legislation. He also advocated for the fire service at the federal level.

“It was an eye-opening experience for me,” Thompson said.

In July, Thompson met with President Joe Biden when the U.S. president signed the Fire Grants and Safety Act at the White House.

“To have the opportunity to go into the Oval Office and participate in such a prestigious event in the presence of the most powerful man in the world was just incredible,” he said at the time.

Thompson said he was nominated for the Hall of Fame for his years of service at the local, state and federal levels. The induction ceremony took place earlier this month at the Owensboro Convention Center as the Kentucky Firefighters Association held its annual conference. Only two firefighters have been inducted into the Hall of Fame this year.

For Thompson, it was the perfect evening because it took place in his hometown.

“It was pretty cool. You’re one of the two chosen ones and you get to do it in your hometown, in front of your family, friends and the fire department. It’s a very special occasion,” he said.

Looking back on his 39 years of service, Thompson said this is not the end for him and he looks forward to more rewarding years ahead.

“I don’t plan on quitting anytime soon,” he said. “I enjoy volunteer firefighting. I enjoy working in the community and providing guidance to those who want it and ask for it.”
