A’ja Wilson of the Las Vegas Aces celebrates after becoming the first WNBA player to score 1,000 points in a single season.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — A’ja Wilson became the first WNBA player to score 1,000 points in a season when she scored 29 points in the Las Vegas Aces’ 84-71 win over the Connecticut Sun on Sunday.

Wilson hit a pull-up from the elbow with 2 minutes left in the game and reached the mark. Earlier this week, the Aces star broke the Points record in a season that Jewell Loyd set last year. Las Vegas called a timeout about 30 seconds later and her teammates harassed Wilson.

She then entered the square and accepted the loud applause of the audience with clapping hands.

The Aces (25-13) have a one-game lead over Seattle for the No. 4 seed in the playoffs and have home-court advantage in this series. Las Vegas has won seven of its last eight games.

Connecticut (27-11) is two games behind the Minnesota Lynx for second place. The two teams play in Connecticut on Tuesday.

The Sun hit just 4 of 16 field shots in the third quarter — 0 of 5 three-pointers — as the Aces extended their eight-point lead to 71-51 at halftime heading into the fourth quarter. Young’s pull-up jumper midway through the quarter made it 58-47 and Las Vegas led by double digits the rest of the game. Wilson was dominant on both ends, hitting 6 of 8 field shots and both of her three-pointers, and scored 14 points with four rebounds and two blocks in the third quarter.

Marina Mabrey led the Sun with 18 points. Brionna Jones added 17 points on 7-of-12 shooting and nine rebounds and Tyasha Harris scored 16 points.

Jones averaged 20.1 points per game in seven games in September, shooting 66% (59 of 89).

Kelsey Plum, who finished with 14 points, hit a 3-pointer to give the Aces the lead for good and sparked an 11-1 run that ended in 48-40 when she capped the final spurt with a step-back jumper to end the first half.
