A’ja Wilson thinks she “doesn’t deserve to wear clothes” given the white T-shirt trend

Las Vegas Aces superstar A’ja Wilson’s recent pregame wardrobe choices—particularly wearing plain white T-shirts—have attracted attention and made it clear where her focus lies.

Wilson’s Aces team struggled in August, finishing 3-4 and lacking cohesion on offense. Although Wilson continued to play at a world-class level during the two-time defending WNBA champions’ ongoing struggles, she told the Las Vegas Review-Journal that she sees wearing white T-shirts as self-punishment for what the Aces are going through.

“I have to have a desire to put on clothes. Right now, where I am, I don’t feel I deserve to put on clothes,” Wilson said in an Aug. 31 Review Journal article.

“Right now, my main focus is getting wins,” Wilson continued, “so if we start getting some wins, maybe I could show up and show something. Right now, I’m digging in the bottom of my T-shirt drawer, putting a shirt on and going out there.”

The fact that Wilson is a clear favorite for the WNBA MVP title shows that she is not to blame for the Aces’ subpar season. And their head coach Becky Hammon confirmed this.

“Everything I’ve asked her to do, she just does it and makes it look so easy. It’s not easy,” Hammon said in the Review-Journal article. “And then you know you have a special player, Steph Curry, who shoots threes. He makes it look easy. What he does is difficult. And I think (Wilson) is a similar, just special, generational talent.”

The Aces have played a little better in recent games, but with Wilson’s white shirts becoming so notorious, she may decide to stick with them pregame from now on.
