Alabama Crimson Tide vs. Wisconsin Badgers: Open thread for the second half

Alabama Crimson Tide vs. Wisconsin Badgers: Open thread for the second half

The main story of the game is that Wisconsin quarterback Tyler Van Dyke left the game in the 1st quarter with a knee injury and the Badgers have essentially had no offense since then with the backup quarterback.

They were able to prevent a few runs against Alabama’s defense and got into field goal position twice, but were only able to convert one of them. Alabama’s defense was solid overall, the biggest issue was some tackling mishaps, which I think is due to them playing a P4 team for the first time this season, and some of Wisconsin’s RBs gaining extra yards through contact.

Offensively, things were a little rockier for the Tide. Jalen Milroe missed a few throws, and it seemed like the offense often stalled due to poor throws to WRs or RBs in the flats. However, Milroe made up for that with a fantastic touchdown throw to Ryan Williams on a go-ball, and then a 2-play drive to end the half with a deep throw to Williams and a perfectly placed post-corner route to Germie Bernard in the end zone.

Alabama and Milroe have a lot of experience with long passes in this game and that has been the offense’s success story so far. The offensive line looks much more cohesive with Kadyn Proctor back in the lineup and Milroe has not had to run for his life on his passing plays so far.

The freshman WR really seems to be developing into a focal point of the offense as he leads the team with 4 catches for 78 yards and a TD in one half.

There were a lot of designed runs by the quarterback, which shortened the runs by Jam Miller and Justice Haynes. Overall, though, the Tide averaged 6 yards per carry on 16 attempts, which is definitely an impressively efficient running attack.

The Tide needs to work on better sustaining their offense and running down the clock in the second half, and the defense can’t let up. But Alabama is controlling the game for the most part right now, although Wisconsin’s defense is definitely doing its best to make things difficult for the Tide.
