Alaska Airlines maintenance error causes significant delays at Fresno Airport for hundreds

Hundreds of frustrated passengers were stranded at Fresno Yosemite Airport after Alaska Airlines announced there was a maintenance problem with one of its planes.

Passengers who had booked with the airline had to wait almost 24 hours for their plane to be repaired.

Their complaint? Two passengers told FOX26 News that it was mainly a lack of communication about what happened.

On Friday, they were finally informed that it had something to do with a door popping open as the plane was flying to Fresno.

Alaska Airlines issued the following statement to FOX26: “We are working on a standard maintenance issue on the aircraft that requires additional time to locate the correct replacement part. This is not related to any doors on the aircraft.”

Lynn Whitesides and Jaime Holt, who were stuck at the airport, finally reached their destination around 3 p.m. on Friday. They got to know each other despite the inconvenience.

Both were supposed to be in Seattle since Thursday.

“We just met, by the way. We had booked a flight that was supposed to leave yesterday, Thursday, at 4:45 p.m., a direct flight from Fresno to Seattle on Alaska Airlines,” said Jaime Holt.

According to both, they received a notification that their flight was delayed approximately every 30 to 45 minutes.

She says her flight was delayed about every 30 minutes.

At around 8 p.m. they were informed that they would not be able to make their flights on Thursday.

According to Holt, they were told, “Sorry, your flight was canceled, but I heard we’re sending a new plane down and there will be a plane ready to go Friday morning at 9:00 a.m. to take all of you, probably close to 100 people who were here last night, to Seattle.”

But when they arrived at the airport on Friday morning, the plane was not ready for departure.

She said they were told they were still waiting for a spare part to be delivered to repair the plane.

“If we had rented a car yesterday, we could have driven five hours last night, had a good night’s sleep and would be in Seattle right now. So that’s pretty ridiculous,” Holt said.

Around noon, Whitesides and Holt said they finally received an update from the plane’s pilot.

Both say the pilot told everyone over the intercom that they were probably all waiting for information that might not be made public and that he wanted to reassure them.

Whitesides said he told them that the plane they were taking to Seattle had its door ripped open twice on approach to Fresno.

She continued, saying he told them, “…given Alaska’s history of things flying out of airplanes, they wanted to make sure this didn’t happen and was properly addressed before we left Fresno for Seattle again.”

Alaska Airlines issued the following statement to fox26:

FOX26 News has asked Alaska Airlines for comment on the passengers’ complaints.

We also asked if there was a problem with doors popping open. They said it had nothing to do with the doors.

FOX26 has sent them the statement the pilot gave to the passengers. They have not responded to us.

Whitesides says the airline only offered them a $12 meal voucher as compensation.

“We are very happy that they made the delays to repair our aircraft so that we were not flying unsafely, but there should be contingency plans in place to prevent this and save passengers any unnecessary stress,” Whitesides said.
