Albany airport boss’s contract will not be renewed

Albany International Airport will have a new manager in 2025.

The contract of Phil Calderone, CEO of the Albany County Airport Authority, will not be renewed on Dec. 1, according to the airport authority’s board of directors. Calderone, a former longtime deputy mayor of Albany and deputy Albany County executive, held the position for five years.

The board’s statement said it informed Calderone of its decision on Monday and commissioned a national search firm to find a successor for Calderone.

“The search process will take several months and we expect to have a new CEO in place in the new year,” the statement said. “We are confident that we will find and hire a new leader of high caliber for this important position.”

But in a letter written Wednesday to the chair, majority leader and head of the Albany County Assembly’s Mass Transportation Committee, Republican Reps. Jennifer Whalen and Ryan Conway requested a committee meeting to hear directly from the Albany County Airport Authority board about Calderone’s future.

“The public should be informed why this happened,” it said. “If the board replaces Mr. Calderone as CEO, it should explain how it will proceed in its next selection process.”
