Which well-known retail stores have filed for bankruptcy?
Red Lobster, Walgreens, Rite Aid and many other retailers are struggling with deteriorating financial conditions.
Rite Aid will close all stores in Michigan by the end of September and transfer customers’ prescription drugs to Walgreens, a Rite Aid spokesperson confirmed to the Free Press in an email Wednesday.
While the time frame for the store closures is new, the store closures themselves come as no surprise.
In June, the Free Press, citing Rite Aid officials, reported on the plan to close all stores and transfer prescriptions to Walgreens. Rite Aid confirmed Wednesday that it would close all 186 stores in Michigan.
Since filing for bankruptcy in October 2023, Rite Aid has been closing stores across the country and in Michigan
Rite Aid filed for bankruptcy under the U.S. Chapter 11 procedure due to falling sales, rising debts and lawsuits accusing the company and other pharmacies of illegally issuing prescriptions that contributed to a nationwide opioid epidemic.
Stores across the state have posted “business closing” signs in their windows.
