While Amazon Fresh celebrated its store opening in Bensalem Township on Thursday, preparations for a new location in nearby Middletown Township were in full swing.

The Amazon Fresh store in Middletown Township is located in the Lincoln Plaza shopping center on East Lincoln Highway near the Oxford Valley Mall and is currently looking for full-time and part-time employees, according to job postings.

There is no official opening date yet and a spokesperson for Amazon Fresh declined to comment.

“They’re putting the finishing touches on things, but the big installations seem to be done. Now it’s just the smaller details,” said a contractor who was at the shop recently. LevittownNow.com.

According to the contractor, the bakery area of the store is completed, aisle signage is in place, and installation of perishable shelving and refrigerators is nearly complete.

An employee of a neighboring company said he noticed increased activity at the construction site, including work on the heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems.

Jim Ennis, Middletown Township’s director of building and zoning, said in May that Amazon received its first permits in 2021 and the project has undergone several revisions since then.

Although the facade was completed in 2022, interior work was delayed as Amazon Fresh reconsidered its grocery launch strategy.

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy took a strategic expansion break last year.

“We’ve decided over the last year that we’re not going to expand the physical fresh produce section until we get to the equation of differentiation and economic value that we like, but we’re optimistic we’ll find that,” Jassy said.

After successful redesigns and positive customer feedback in Chicago and Southern California, Amazon resumed its expansion, adding new features such as improved departmentalization, a wider selection of grab-and-go meals and lower prices. Some locations even have a Krispy Kreme outlet, according to the company.

The Middletown store will have a liquor license it acquired from the now-closed Ground Round. The license allows the store to sell beer and wine, similar to the strategy of Giant Food Stores and Shop Rite.

At the opening on Thursday in Bensalem Township, there was a long line and the store seemed well attended.
