As police increase patrols in and around Central Park due to a 200 percent increase in robberies, another robbery occurred Tuesday evening.

Two victims were approached by two men around 11 p.m. Tuesday, according to police, who robbed them of a necklace and a vape pen. The NYPD said the robbery occurred near West 62nd Street and West Drive, and the search for suspects is ongoing.

No injuries were reported in the latest incident. Data from the New York Police Department shows that the number of robberies in the park is three times higher in 2024 than in 2023.

New York police are searching for a suspect in connection with a robbery of three New Yorkers in Central Park. Police said there has been an increase in robberies in the famous park. News 4’s Jessica Cunnington reports.

Police are searching for a suspect in a robbery Tuesday morning. The robbery occurred around 1 a.m. Tuesday in the plaza on the southeast edge of the park at the corner of 59th Street and 5th Avenue, according to the NYPD.

Police said three people were walking together when they were approached by a group of four people, and one person in that group pretended to have a firearm. One of the suspects took a pair of AirPods and a necklace, and when the group ran off, three of them were arrested, but one was able to escape, police said.

Police said no one was injured in Tuesday morning’s robbery, part of a disturbing trend this year.

The number of robberies on Central Park’s 2,000-acre site has increased 200% so far in 2024. According to the NYPD, 30 have occurred this year, compared to 10 at the same time last year.

“Several people surround people, rob them at knifepoint or gunpoint, sometimes they just rob people violently, so this is a problem that we need to get under control,” said the Deputy Commissioner for Public Information Tarik Sheppard tells NBC New York.

“It’s scary,” said Harry Lawton of Williamsburg. “It’s horrible and scary.”

The New York Police Department said it would increase patrols, install additional cameras throughout the park and use drones to cover a larger area.

“You can’t have a camera everywhere and watch the whole park. But we’ve done it before and we hope we can get the numbers down again and make people understand that Central Park is safe,” Sheppard said.
