Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, a major international hub and one of Europe’s largest airports, is making significant progress on sustainability by expanding its plant-based food offering. By 2030, the airport aims to switch 60% of its food offering to plant-based products, which is expected to reduce food-related emissions by half compared to 2023 levels. This transition will be gradual to maintain price stability, with a focus on appealing product presentation to encourage travelers to choose these environmentally friendly alternatives.

In addition to promoting plant-based alternatives, Schiphol is also committed to ethical sourcing standards. By 2025, all coffee and cocoa sold at the airport will be FairTrade certified and every product is guaranteed to be produced without deforestation. The airport’s food and beverage partners must also consider the environmental and social impacts of their entire supply chain.

Schiphol’s sustainability vision goes beyond food. The airport is also working to become a zero-waste facility by 2030, with the goal of reducing resource loss to less than 1%. This includes using recycled and reusable packaging, minimizing food waste during preparation and encouraging waste prevention among consumers. In addition, the design and construction of food outlets will be more circular and modular, allowing for easier upgrades and maintenance.
