A man who attempted to rob a Maplewood liquor store was no match for the owner’s 8-year-old daughter, a criminal complaint says.

What do we know?

Conchobhar Morrell (also known as Conor Morrell) is charged with aggravated robbery in connection with the robbery of Big Discount Liquors on White Bear Avenue in Maplewood.

According to the criminal complaint, Morrell entered the store around 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, August 10, and pulled out what appeared to be a pistol – but was later determined to be an air rifle.

The indictment states that Morrell ordered the clerk at the liquor store to give him “everything.” The clerk told Morrell he would give him the money but told him to put the gun away because his eight-year-old daughter was there.

What happened next?

The clerk did not react quickly enough, so Morrell went behind the counter to grab the money, the indictment says. Fearing for his daughter’s safety, the clerk grabbed the gun and struck Morrell.

Upon reviewing surveillance video, Maplewood police said the eight-year-old girl also tried to help, waving the bat around to support her father during the fight.

Morrell eventually ran away, police said, but was arrested near the store. When speaking to officers, he denied ever having been in the store.

What’s next for Morrell?

Morrell appeared in court on Tuesday and is scheduled to return for another hearing on Friday. He has been behind bars in the Ramsey County Jail since Tuesday evening.
