Thirty dogs, a cat and two chickens were released to safety Wednesday after officials rescued them from a San Ysidro home that flooded due to a water main problem.

The animals are in the care of the Humane Society’s locations in San Diego, El Cajon, Escondido and Oceanside, with the exception of four animals that were taken to emergency veterinary clinics, the animal welfare organization said in a statement.

The San Diego Police Department notified Animal Control Tuesday afternoon of a home with several animals in need of assistance in the 3700 block of Shooting Star Drive.

The San Diego Humane Society medical team will examine the animals and decide the best course of action for each cat, dog and chicken.

The Humane Society has more dogs than it needs on all campuses as it tries to control an infectious disease outbreak on the San Diego campus. In August, a record average of 801 dogs per day were in care.

The Humane Society is asking the public to help make room in animal shelters by adopting, fostering and attempting to reunite stray pets rather than taking them directly to the shelter, the statement said.
